In December 2016, citizens’ movements from Africa met in Dakar (Gorée Island) for a first meeting that gave activists from Gambia, Ivory Coast, DRC, Congo Brazzaville, Chad, Madagascar, Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Senegal the opportunity to exchange and pursue their common action dynamics. Thus, the establishment of the pan-African platform Afrikki Mwinda bringing together all citizens’ movements was confirmed. This platform promises, among other things, the following central axes:
  • Solidarity of actions between movements in different countries;
  • Boosting African citizen awareness and strengthening the image of African citizen movements through the establishment of various mechanisms;
  • Strengthen the movements’ capacities for action and advocacy (rapid response/shared tools/lessons learned);
  • Creation of rapid, flexible and independent financing mechanisms with a common fund, in particular one for supporting activists in danger;

Afrikki Mwinda took the initiative to organize from July 23 to 28, 2018 in Dakar the first edition of the Popular University of Citizen Engagement (UPEC) on the theme: “citizenship and the right to decide” . This annual meeting is intended to be a space for debate and reflection between different networks: independent activists, committed members of citizen movements, intellectuals, artists and other citizen actors across Africa and the world. Researchers, journalists and any other actor interested in citizen movements will find a framework for study that can nourish their work. UPEC will offer theoretical sessions intended to enrich the conceptual and scientific base of engaged citizens. The days will also be punctuated by moments of exchange and debate around strong themes. The University is designed as a complete citizen universe where different activities are articulated to take into account the fertility of African youth.
